William Porter’s bravery and heroism, long a part of the theater’s history, are marked by memorials inside the building. The Yolo County Historical Society purchased the building in 1971 to ensure that it did not fall to the wrecking ball and bulldozer. Declared a state historical park in 1976, the Historical Society gave the property to the State of California in 1980; and in 1981, the restoration began.

Careful attention was paid to reproduction of the wallpaper friezes, paint colors, and carpeting. The main floor carpet was manufactured in England and shipped to the Opera House for installation. Comfortable main floor theater seating was built on the East Coast for installation, and the historic pew-like benches in the balcony area were repaired or carefully replaced. The area was well irrigated due to the efforts of James Moore, which drew people into farming as the soil was very fertile. The city gained a federal post office in 1861 with the help of Missourian Frank S. Freeman.A year after this, in 1862, the county seat was moved from Washington (present day West Sacramento) to Woodland after Washington was flooded. The addition of a railroad line to Sacramento, and the more recent addition of Interstate 5, helped the city to thrive.
As one of only four fully functioning 19th century opera houses left in California, the Guild and the community are eager to preserve the building and its legacy. During the restoration, the building was made structurally safe and “earthquake proofed”. Central heat and air-conditioning, a sprinkler and alarm system, and handicap access were added. An annex was built to house the mechanical equipment necessary for the above and for administrative office space, a will-call counter, the mid-level Lounge, and rooftop exterior deck. In 1990 with the help of the Woodland Rotary Club, the south side grassy “Rotary Court” was added to compliment the City’s Heritage Plaza. The interior of the Opera House has been painstakingly restored to the grandeur it enjoyed at the turn of the century.
The 2010 United States Census[26] reported that Woodland had a population of 55,468. The population density was 3,624.7 inhabitants per square mile (1,399.5/km2). In 2018, thanks in part to the establishment of the new community near Pioneer High School, Spring Lake Elementary was created. Parsons was a dynamo busting the balls of Etheredge in trying to get to the bottom of Joe Hardy’s background. Etheredge with his tall sly demeanor was a lovable devil and great at covering up the small mishaps with the sound system during his musical number.
Interstate 5 enters the city from the east and curves northward over the remainder of Woodland, exiting northwest. SR 113 enters the city from the south as a controlled access freeway and merges with the I-5, then diverges leaving the city northward as a standard two-lane road. Our tour began in the ticket office at a display case filled with old photographs. The current opera house was built in 1896, using some of the remaining foundations and bricks from the original opera house that was lost to the 1892 fire that burned much of downtown Woodland. Sadly, one of the firefighters lost his life in that blaze when a wall collapsed and fell on him.
